Health Disorders Associated with Snoring
Sleep Apnea: Snoring is often associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Apnea comes from the Greek word meaning "breathless." As we age, we lose muscle tone and put on weight, which leads to an obstructed airway during sleep. Some snorers with sleep apnea will stop breathing hundreds of times per night, which may decrease blood flow to the brain and raises blood pressure. At best, this causes as a feeling of tiredness throughout the day and, at worst, can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
Atherosclerosis: A new study has shown a significant correlation between snoring and the development of atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries) in the carotid artery. The authors of the study theorized that the vibrations caused by snoring may damage the lining of the carotid artery (situated in the throat next to the esophagus), leading to atherosclerotic buildup. The study also showed that the heavier the snoring, the greater the risk for carotid atherosclerosis.
Diabetes: Recent research has indicated that the lack of oxygen flow caused by snoring may lead to insulin resistance which is a known precursor of diabetes.
